Morgan Wallen sentenced to 7 days in jail for chair throwing incident

Morgan Wallen will spend seven days in a DUI training center, months after he was arrested for throwing a chair from the roof of a Nashville bar.

A judge in Nashville sentenced the 31-year-old country star on Thursday, December 31, to a one-week prison sentence to be served in a DUI education center and two years of probation – one year for each of his misdemeanor charges of reckless endangerment 12. The star must also pay a $350 fine and court costs.

“Mr Wallen has cooperated fully with authorities over the past eight months, communicating directly with and apologizing to all those involved. Mr. Wallen remains committed to making a positive impact through his music and his foundation,” his attorney Worrick Robinson IV said in a statement to PEOPLE.

Wallen pleaded guilty to a conditional charge of judicial diversion, and if he successfully completes the terms of his probation, his defendants will be eligible for parole and release.

The “One Thing at a Time” singer was arrested on April 7 after throwing a chair from the roof of Chief’s Bar. He was charged with three counts of reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct, according to court records obtained by PEOPLE.

Wallen’s most recent hearing was in May and his attorney, Worrick Robinson, attended on his behalf after the country star waived his right to appear in court. After a discussion between the lawyers and the judge, the case was continued in August – and then postponed until December.

“Today was a very typical day in a criminal case in Davidson County General Sessions Court,” Robinson told reporters after the hearing.

“This is obviously a very complicated case and it will not resolve itself without subpoenas and witnesses,” he continued. “We will handle the case on our end and then Morgan will be here on August 15th. Several things could happen – we could have a hearing, we could settle the case, or the case could continue. These are the options. “We are not required to file a cause of action of any kind.”

On the day of his arrest, Nashville police said two officers were standing outside Chief’s Bar, a six-story bar and restaurant on Broadway, when they watched a chair allegedly thrown by Wallen fall from the roof to street level.

Days after the incident, a source told PEOPLE that the “I Had Some Help” singer wasn’t expected at the bar’s opening and didn’t spend much time there before he allegedly threw the chair.

“Morgan is generally a nice, fun person to spend time with, but when he gets going, he doesn’t know when to stop,” the source told PEOPLE. “Morgan and alcohol are a problem and it’s a problem that keeps coming back.”

On April 19, the singer – who was previously arrested for public intoxication in May 2020 – spoke out about his arrest in a statement posted to his X account.

“I didn’t feel right coming forward publicly until I made amends with some people. I have contacted Nashville law enforcement, my family and the good people at Chief’s. “I am not proud of my behavior and accept responsibility,” he wrote. “I have the utmost respect for the officers who work every day to keep us all safe. There will be no change as far as my tour is concerned.”

That same month, PEOPLE spoke with Nashville-based criminal defense attorney and legal expert David Raybin, who said that while Wallen could technically face up to six years in prison on the three charges, there’s a good chance he’ll be sentenced to the maximum sentence and will be served All these sentences in a row are “very far away”.

Most recently, Wallen was named Entertainer of the Year at the 2024 CMA Awards, where he did not accept the award. It remains unclear why Wallen – who ended his One Night at a Time tour in October – wasn’t in attendance.
