When Moana was named Tautai, she received a vision from her ancestor explaining the meaning of the lost island. It was called Motufetū, which translated from Samoan means “Motufetū”.Star Island.“A thousand years before the beginning of the First Moana In the film, Motufetū served as the central hub of all the Pacific islands. IIt connected the people and their different islands and allowed them to travel from place to place. It is suggested that this was vital to the survival of the people. When the god Nalo sank Motufetū and cursed the island, everyone was magically separated.

Because of this, Moana was unable to reach any other inhabited islands during her years-long journey. Motufetū has intersecting lines dividing dozens of pie sections, each containing individual islands and villages. With the sunken hub island, Sailors like Moana were unable to venture into other sectors and were instead confined to their own sea area. They could neither exchange knowledge or supplies nor satisfy the desire to interact with different people and create an expanded sense of community. Without this, Moana’s island would be doomed to eventually become extinct, and it was up to her to prevent that.

Why Nalo sank Motufetū to the bottom of the ocean

The god of lightning, Nalo, wanted more power

Nalo in Moana 2

Nalo is the god of storms and lightning Moana 2. He is described as vindictive and envious and appears to have a deep dislike of humans. Nalo believed that separating people would increase his own power, although the exact reason for this is never fully explained Moana. Still, this probably has something to do with the sense of unity that comes from keeping the islands of the Pacific Ocean connected by Motufetū. There is clearly power in keeping these villages unitedand that seemed to be something Nalo felt threatened by.

There’s still a lot of space left after the end Moana 2 to further explore Nalo and his motivations. The sequel’s mid-credits scene shows this god in the flesh, angry that Moana had somehow managed to break the curse he had placed on Motufetū. He also explains that he’s just getting started with his villainy, so Disney will likely produce more Moana Sequels or spin-offs to further unravel Nalo’s story. Perhaps it will become a little clearer why Nalo was so determined to divide the people of the Pacific. For now, it can be attributed to his own desire for power.

Moana’s vision of Tautai Vasa led her to Motufetū

Moana learned her fate from her ancestor

Moana was called to break the curse of Motufetū when she received a vision from one of her ancestors, Tautai Vasa. The same old chief was seen in the first part Moana film, and the sequel revealed that he was titled Tautai before the village of Motunui hid all of his boats following the theft of Te Fiti’s heart. When Moana became a Wayfinder, her father was Cheif Tui decided it was time for his daughter to become Motunui’s Tautai. Moana was struck by lightning during her ceremony and in the brief moment she was unconscious, Tautai Vasa appeared to her. That’s implied This ancestor’s attempt to break Nalo’s curse on Motufetū cost him his lifeand Moana is aware that that was exactly what was at stake. How Moana broke the curse of Motufetū

Moana’s success came at a price in Moana 2

With the help of her crew Maui and the surprising counter-villain Matangi, Moana successfully reached the island of Motufetū. The original plan was for Maui to pull the island out of the sea so Moana could enter it and break the curse. However, Nalo would not allow this. Maui lost his demigod powers in the effort and was left at the mercy of the waves, and Moana quickly realized that she must follow Matangi’s advice and “Get out“If she hoped to achieve her goal. Moana’s self-sacrifice allowed her to successfully break Nalo’s curse, and She lost her life, just as Tautai Vasa had warned. However, Moana’s efforts were rewarded when all of her ancestors, including Gramma Tala, came together to bring her back. Although it is never explicitly stated (Maui interrupts Moana before she can say the words), it is implied that Moana is resurrected as a demigod, just like Maui was when he was thrown into the sea as an infant. With her newly earned tattoo and Maui’s powers restored, Motufetū was pulled from the sea and the islands of the Pacific were finally reunited Moana 2– a happy ending.
