The Indonesian province of Aceh was hit hardest by the tsunami

In Indonesia’s Aceh province, where the tsunami killed around 100,000 people, a siren sounded from the Baiturrahman Mosque to start a series of commemorations.

Thousands gathered at mass graves in the region, near the geological epicenter off the northwest coast of Sumatra where most of the Indonesian victims died.

Hundreds of survivors visited a mass grave in the village of Ulee Lheue, where more than 14,000 unknown victims are buried. They scattered flower petals on stones to mark the graves of their loved ones.
