MADISON (WKOW) — A shooting was reported Monday morning at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison.

According to Madison police, officers were called to the scene just before 11 a.m. A second-grader called 911 to report the shooting.

When officers got there, they found several people had been shot.

Chief Barnes said the suspected shooter was Natalie “Samantha” Rupnow, 15. She died on the way to the hospital from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Barnes said she is a student at Abundant Life Christian School.

Barnes said he was aware of a manifesto circulating, possibly from the shooter, but could not confirm its legitimacy.

The police seized a pistol. The shooting was confined to one room during study hall, Chief Barnes said.

The teenager shot another student and a teacher. Six other people, a teacher and five students, were injured. Two students are in critical condition and are believed to have life-threatening injuries. Three students and the teacher have non-life-threatening injuries. Two of those people were released from the hospital.

During the initial news conference, Madison police had said five people had died, but they later updated that report to say three people had died and six were injured.

Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said the school building was clear and there was no further threat to the public.

Chief Barnes said investigators are working to determine a motive. Officials have contacted the family of the suspected shooter. Chief Barnes said her family is cooperating.

“Today is truly a sad day for Madison and for our country,” said Chief Barnes.

Madison police asked the public to continue to avoid the area. The school is located on E. Buckeye Road, off Stoughton Road. It is expected that roads will be closed.

Abundant Life Christian School released the following statement on its Facebook page on Monday:

“Prayers requested! There was an active shooter incident at ALCS today. We are in the middle of tracking. We will share information as we can.” Please pray for our Challenger Companymily.”

It took longer for some school staff and teachers to be reunited with their families as they remained on site to assist law enforcement.
