The Lion King is one of Disney’s most popular and beloved film franchises. The latest installment in the series, “Mufasa: The Lion King,” is now available in theaters. This is a sequel to the 2019 photorealistic animated feature film The Lion King. In addition to English, the film has also been dubbed into Telugu, Tamil and Hindi. Superstar Mahesh Babu lent his voice to the lead character of the film. Here is the review of this highly anticipated film.

What is it about?

The story begins with Simba and Nala embarking on a new journey. They leave their daughter Kiara with Timon and Pumbaa. After she leaves, Kiara worries about her parents. Then Rafiki tells her the legendary story of her grandfather Mufasa.

During his childhood, Mufasa (MaheshBabu) is separated from his parents by a flood and ends up in a country ruled by Obasi. Meanwhile, Obasi’s son Taka (Satya Dev) becomes Mufasa’s close friend and his brother. When her clan is threatened by outsiders, Mufasa must protect the next king, Taka. The challenges they face and how they overcome these hurdles form the core of the film.

performances

Superstar Mahesh Babu’s voice is the biggest asset of this film. His fans would enjoy every single frame where they hear Mahesh’s voice. He was well supported by Satyadev as Taka, Brahmanandam and Ali as Timon and Pumba respectively.

But despite a wonderful voice cast, the film falls short of expectations. Due to the poor script and outdated plot, these stalwarts couldn’t save this project.

Technical details

Every fan of the “Lion King” series knows the world and its characters. So all the writing team had to do was wrap this world into a captivating narrative. That’s when Mufasa starts to falter. Although director Barry Jenkins managed to deliver great visuals, he could have focused more on the story. Jeff Nathanson’s script is weak and lacks emotional depth. The film is all about the visuals, and Team Disney deserves credit for bringing such captivating visuals to the screen. The details are so rich, as is the live animation work. The music was a big disappointment. There is no stimulating background music or a catchy album like the original version.

Thumbs up

Thumbs down

Lack of emotional depth
Boring script
Music

analysis

Director Barry Jenkins is known for the Oscar-winning feature film “Moonlight.” Mufasa is his first photorealistic animated film. The first part, “The Lion King” (2019), was directed by Jon Favreau and was a huge box office success. However, he failed to recreate the magic of the original version. The same is the case with Barry. It managed to showcase images and characters well, but failed to give the audience the emotional impact it needed.

Despite being treated to the enchanting voices of Mahesh Babu, Satya Dev, Brahmanandam, Ali and others, the scenes don’t work at all. A few one-liners from Brahmi and Ali’s works and Zazu’s dialogues entertain us in sections. The music was a big disappointment. Overall, Mufasa: The Lion King is a boring watch for Mahesh Babu fans and a completely disappointing watch for fans of the original version. Only children who haven’t seen the original might find it entertaining.

Conclusion: Even Superstar couldn’t save this boring prequel!
