“MW’s Nevarez to suit up for Boise State ahead of CFP reveal.”

Mountain West Conference commissioner Gloria Nevarez became the latest conference commissioner to advocate for her league ahead of Sunday’s College Football Playoff announcement, insisting that No. 10 Boise State earn a bye into first place deserved round.

“Participating in the College Football Playoff is not about entitlement,” Nevarez said. “It shouldn’t depend on a conference patch or the logo on the helmet. It is based on the performance and overall performance of Mountain West champion Boise State this season, including an 11-game winning streak, has earned it a spot among the top four seeds ahead of the Big 12 champion.”

The statement — which notably makes no mention of the ACC — appears to be a direct response to several comments made this week by Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark, who argued that his conference’s champion deserves to be ahead of everyone Champion of Group 5.

“Under no circumstances should a Group 5 champion be ranked higher than our champion,” he said on Wednesday.

He reiterated that sentiment Saturday after No. 15 Arizona State beat No. 16 Iowa State 45-19.

“There should be no comparison between us and any G5 conference winner,” he said. “The strength of the schedule is important. We played nine conference games, we’re scheduled to play a tenth (a non-conference game against Power 4). You know the data points. I don’t want to go into it too much today, but I will definitely double that.

The possibility of ASU (11-2) overtaking Boise State (12-1) seems unlikely considering the Broncos earned a comfortable 21-7 win over No. 20 UNLV in the Mountain West championship game on Friday night. Heisman Trophy candidate Ashton Jeanty ran for 209 yards on 32 carries for Boise State.

Because the commissioners lobbied against each other’s conference, both could get byes in the first round, considering Boise State and Arizona State edged No. 17 Clemson (10-3), SMU on Saturday night in the ACC title game defeated.
