Nancy Pelosi, the former speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, suffered an injury on a trip to Luxembourg and was taken to a hospital for evaluation, her office said in a statement on Friday.

Pelosi, 84, is the first woman to serve as speaker of the House of Representatives and was also the longtime leader of the House Democratic Caucus.

“While traveling with a bipartisan congressional delegation to Luxembourg to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, Speaker Emeritus Nancy Pelosi sustained an injury during an official event and was taken to the hospital for evaluation,” said Pelosi spokesman Ian Krager. said in a statement.

Krager added: “Speaker Emerita Pelosi is currently receiving excellent care from doctors and medical professionals. She keeps working.”

The San Francisco congresswoman stepped down from her role as speaker — a powerful position second only to vice president in the presidency — in 2023, but continues to serve in the House of Representatives.

She was re-elected in November for another two-year term starting January 3.

Pelosi played a key role in passing Joe Biden’s sweeping $1 trillion infrastructure bill in 2022 and famously feuded with Donald Trump during her first four years in office, culminating the moment she gave his speech on the State of the Union ripped apart on national television in 2020.

Pelosi was a prominent figure in Washington during her tenure, which spanned seven presidential terms. She first served as House Speaker from 2007 to 2011, then regained the post in 2019 after her party regained control of the House in the 2018 midterm elections.

Democrats lost their majority in the House of Representatives in 2022, and Republicans will have a narrow majority again next year when President-elect Trump returns to the White House.
