Nancy Pelosi is in the hospital after being injured on a trip abroad

Former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was hospitalized after suffering an unspecified injury during an official trip to Luxembourg, her office said Friday.

Pelosi, 84, is “currently receiving excellent care from doctors and medical professionals,” spokesman Ian Krager said in a statement.

The Democrat, who still represents California in the U.S. House of Representatives, traveled to Luxembourg with a bipartisan congressional delegation to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge.

Krager said Pelosi “looks forward to returning to the United States soon” and continues to work at the hospital.

The San Francisco congresswoman was a prominent figure in U.S. politics in a career that spanned seven presidential administrations.

She first served as speaker of the House of Representatives, an influential post in the second tier of the presidency after vice president, from 2007 to 2011, then regained that post in 2019 after her party regained control of the chamber.

She resigned from her position in 2023 after two separate four-year terms in the role. But she continued to serve in the House of Representatives. She was elected to another two-year term last month.

According to House Speaker Mike Johnson’s office, Pelosi joined 17 other House members on the bipartisan trip to Luxembourg. The delegation is expected to participate in anniversary events alongside veterans, their families and military officials.

Pelosi could no longer attend the events, her spokesman said.

Her injury came just days after outgoing Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, suffered a sprained wrist and cuts to his face following a fall at the U.S. Capitol.
