National Guard arrives in LA, curfews planned to curb looting in fire-ravaged areas

L.A. County Sheriff Robert Luna announced several measures Thursday to increase security in areas evacuated due to devastating fires in the area. In recent days there have been more than 20 arrests on suspicion of looting.

As part of that effort, National Guard troops were deployed to some fire areas on Friday to provide protection.

“The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has officially requested assistance from the California National Guard for both fires,” Luna said. “They will support us in traffic control and protecting critical infrastructure.

“Having additional resources and having the National Guard on our side,” he added, “will help send a stronger message and keep people away from the affected areas so that we are not constantly harassing the people who have already been victimized are.”

The sheriff also said the department is working to implement a curfew that would be in effect from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. “within the specific affected areas surrounding the two fire areas,” he said, referring to the Palisades Fire in Pacific Palisades and the Eaton Fire. which ignited in Altadena. He said he hoped to have it finished by Thursday evening, and definitely by Friday evening.

Los Angeles County Executive Kathryn Barger emphasized that the curfew was not intended to punish residents but to ensure the safety of the area. She said the curfew was requested by the Altadena City Council.

Barger said at a news conference Thursday that sheriff’s deputies had arrested people in evacuation zones.

“I promise you, you will be held accountable,” she said. “A shame for those who exploit our residents in this time of crisis.”
