National security adviser Jake Sullivan said Sunday that President Joe Biden is doing what he can to “strengthen” Ukraine’s position as the commander in chief prepares to leave office in just under two months.

Sullivan made the remark on ABC’s “This Week,” telling chief Washington correspondent Jonathan Karl that Biden intends to continue to advance his foreign policy goals – which include ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas – even as it happens President-elect Donald Trump will be sworn back into office on January 20th.

“We will do everything in our power in these 50 days to provide Ukraine with every possible tool to strengthen its position on the battlefield so that it will be stronger at the negotiating table,” Sullivan said. “And President Biden has directed me to oversee a massive increase in the military equipment we are supplying to Ukraine so that by the time President Biden leaves office, we have spent every dollar that Congress has allocated to us.”

Last month, Biden gave the green light to Ukraine’s use of powerful, U.S.-supplied ATACMS long-range missiles for attacks inside Russia.

Trump has expressed skepticism about the amount of aid sent to Ukraine, putting him at odds with Biden, who has been a staunch ally of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as the country continues its fight against Russia.

“I encouraged the Ukrainian team to include both the new team and all of our allies and partners, because even on January 21, the war in Ukraine will not simply end,” Sullivan told Karl. “Of course the new team will have its own policies and approach and I can’t say anything about that, but what I can do is make sure that we put Ukraine in the best possible position when we hand over the baton.”
