NBA Cup Betting: Three Value Bets You Can Make

NBA Cup Betting: Three Value Bets You Can Make

The Emirates NBA Cup has entered its second season. The knockout rounds begin on Tuesday and the Final Four takes place on Saturday and Tuesday. ESPN BET offers odds on which teams are the favorites to advance to the finals and win.

Let’s take a closer look at these odds and identify the best value plays based on the intersection between the win probability and the most juice.

Odds according to ESPN BET

Dallas Mavericks (+750 to win, +300 to final)

Dallas is tied for the fifth/sixth shortest odds, but I think the Mavericks have as good a chance of winning as any team. Of the teams in the Cup, they have the second-highest BPI (5.0 BPI, fourth in the NBA) behind only the Thunder (5.6 BPI, third in the NBA). The Mavs are the reigning runners-up in the NBA Finals and the team that defeated them in the Finals (the Celtics) is not participating in the NBA Cup. Additionally, the Mavs have the longest current winning streak in the NBA at seven wins and have already beaten both the Knicks and Thunder this season.

Atlanta Hawks (+2000 to win, +650 to reach the Finals)

The Hawks have the best long-shot value on the board, with only the injury-plagued Magic boasting higher odds. The Hawks lost their last game but have previously won six straight, including a win over the Bucks and two wins over the Cavaliers during that stretch. The Hawks are shifty and capable of taking on any team when their shots are falling, making them dangerous in a one-and-done format like this. I wouldn’t favor them to win, but at 20 to 1 odds they’re worth considering.

Golden State Warriors (+750 to win, +350 to final)

The Warriors have slowed down a bit after a stellar start to the season that briefly put them atop the Western Conference. But they play strong defense and have Stephen Curry, a combination that makes them dangerous in one-on-one situations. The Warriors have also won two of their last three games against strong competition, splitting games against the Timberwolves and defeating the Rockets during that span.

Final thoughts

I agree with ESPN BET that the Thunder are worthy co-favorites, but these other teams have more potential and, in the case of the Mavericks, are a team I would put on par with the Thunder in terms of being able to win the whole thing.
