NBA Cup: Thunder defeats the Mavericks and takes on the winner Warriors vs. Rockets

On Wednesday night, the Golden State Warriors will make their Emirates NBA Cup debut and reach the playoff field for this season’s second annual Cup. The Dubs will visit the Houston Rockets – a team they have beaten twice in as many tries this year – in the NBA Cup quarterfinals at 6:30 p.m. PT on TNT.

And if the Warriors get three wins in as many tries, we’ll know who they’ll face next: the Oklahoma City Thunder. On Tuesday night, the Thunder defeated the red-hot Dallas Mavericks with a 118-104 win to advance to the semifinals. These semifinals will take place next Saturday in Las Vegas.

So the Warriors know their opponent if they reach the semifinals. Now comes the hard part: actually advancing by beating an excellent Rockets club on the road. And if they can do that, it will only get harder… Not only did the Thunder make it to the NBA Cup, but they also have the best record in the Western Conference. Not only that, but they also beat the Warriors a few weeks ago (albeit narrowly and in a game that Steph Curry missed and the Warriors had won an earlier match).

The Dubs certainly don’t put the cart before the horse. All your attention is on the Rockets. But it’s fun to look ahead to what the rest of the schedule looks like to see who the Warriors will face if they get past Houston.

If the Warriors lose on Wednesday, they will play a game against the Mavericks sometime this week to ensure they have 82 games on the regular season schedule. The Dubs are 1-0 against the Mavs this year.
