NBA results: Jonathan Kuminga and Steph Curry lead Warriors past Suns

After falling to .500 with another loss on Friday night, the Golden State Warriors hosted the Phoenix Suns on Saturday night to complete a difficult matchup. And they were going up against a franchise legend and one of the greatest forwards in NBA history: Kevin Durant.

But while Durant got his luck, it was the Warriors’ forward — the player they had hoped could replace KD’s contributions — who shined brightest on Saturday. In a game full of future Hall of Famers, Jonathan Kuminga shined the most.

Kuminga was also one of the team’s only bright spots on Friday. After the game, Steve Kerr spoke candidly about how the Warriors’ coaches were thinking about how Kuminga can still shine when Steph Curry is healthy, as most of the fourth-year winger’s best games have come without his superstar teammate.

At least for one night, Kuminga, Curry and the coaching staff found a solution. From the moment he first came off the bench, Kuminga was a dynamic force, finishing wherever he wanted on the pitch with a combination of athleticism, brute force, deft footwork, strong ball handling, timely cuts and, at times, sheer will . He made 12 of 20 shots en route to a game-high 34 points and once again lived at the free throw line, shooting 8 of 12… in his last six games, Kuminga averaged 9.5 free throw attempts per game, an elite Brand that helped keep the offense afloat.

He was essentially the Warriors’ entire bench presence. Kevon Looney and Kyle Anderson received DNP CDs, while Moses Moody and Gary Payton II were sidelined with injuries. Buddy Hield and Brandin Podziemski both went scoreless (with the latter exiting after just 11 minutes due to a minor injury), and Lindy Waters III’s three points were the only bench points scored by anyone other than Kuminga.

But unlike Friday, when Kuminga’s contributions stood out against an ugly starting lineup, the Warriors’ starters were ready to go. Steph Curry and Draymond Green returned after a one-game absence and both shined. Curry didn’t have his best statistical game — he needed 22 shots to score 22 points and turned the ball over five times — but his shots came on time and he felt in full control. Green put on a brilliant performance, finishing with 16 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, two steals and one block while shooting 6 of 9 from the field. Trayce Jackson-Davis started at center and had 16 points and 10 rebounds, and the other two starters (Andrew Wiggins and Dennis Schröder) played much better than their stat lines suggested.

However, it was the collective effort with Durant that really shone through, as Green, Wiggins and Kuminga all did brilliant work. KD still scored 31 points, but shot just 10 of 24 from the field and turned the ball over eight times. Combined with the absences of Devin Booker (injury) and Jusuf Nurkić (suspension), this was enough for the Warriors to secure a 109-105 victory.

Unlike the last few games, the Dubs played better in this game. They trailed by five points entering the final quarter, but outscored Phoenix 27-18 in the fourth quarter. With the win, the Warriors move back over .500 with a record of 16-15. They have a day off before hosting the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday night.
