Luka Dončić could face missing playing time.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the Dallas Mavericks superstar could be out for an extended period of time with a calf strain and would leave the arena on crutches after the Christmas game against the Minnesota Timberwolves:

Head coach Jason Kidd didn’t have much of an update after the game when discussing Luka’s injury history.

“You never want anyone to get hurt or suffer injuries, but it’s part of the game,” Kidd told reporters. “Hopefully this is his last and it’s not too serious.”

Before suffering a wrist injury in November, Dončić had only missed one game, missing the Mavs’ game against the Oklahoma City Thunder on November 17 due to a bruised right knee. Even without its star, Dallas won this match against the Thunder 121-119.

The start of the season didn’t go as the Mavericks had hoped after reaching the NBA Finals a year ago. They were 5-7 in 12 games before surpassing .500 with a three-game winning streak before Dončić’s injury in November.

However, the team has gotten hot since then and is now 19-10 on the season.

Dončić, who had an MVP season last year, is averaging 28.8 points, 8.5 rebounds and 8.1 assists. His numbers aren’t quite as impressive as last season when he posted 33.9 points, 9.8 assists and 9.2 rebounds per game, but the star is known to improve his game later in the season.

Regardless, every time he misses weakens the Mavericks significantly. Kyrie Irving will now have to carry a larger offensive load for Dallas.
