Nebraska defeats Penn State to advance to the championship game

Nebraska and Penn State went head-to-head in the NCAA Tournament semifinals. Fans traveled to Louisville and packed up at the Galt House Hotel hours before the game began. Santa Claus even traveled to Kentucky. KETV’s Lauren Michelson and Andy Kendeigh were in Louisville for the incredible day and even met with Lexi Rodriguez’s mother ahead of a historic evening for her daughter. The Huskers and Nittany Lions each had 19 players. Penn State was able to regain the lead as the teams dueled in the finale of the first set. But the Huskers were able to recover and win the first set 25-23. Set two was another nail-biter as the teams traded point for point. Again it was eight before the Huskers won the game. Nebraska led 9-7. Merritt Beason and Allick combined for another big block to push Nebraska to a 13-8 lead. Taylor Landfair came through with a big block for the Big Red. Nebraska beat Penn State with a 25-18 win in the second set. Murray got her sixth kill of the night when she scored twice in the third set. Nebraska challenged for another play and said there was no net violation. On the last play, they won the duel. Allick stepped up and gave the Huskers a two-point lead. Lexi Rodriguez made history in the third set, breaking Justin Wong-Orantes’ record. Penn State won the third set 25-23. Penn State got on the court first in the fourth set, but Beason’s kill began to chip away at the Nittany Lion’s lead. Two consecutive aces from Murray tied the match at 15. Another ace followed by a kill from Murray put Nebraska ahead 18-15. After a back-and-forth with extra points, the Nittany Lions won the fourth set 28-26. Beason got the Huskers on the board first in the fifth set. Penn State got the reverse sweep and advanced to the championship game with a 15-13 fifth set.
