Nebraska is preparing for the Pinstripe Bowl

NEW YORK – The rumble of buses echoed for miles across Fordham University’s quiet campus. Nebraska’s sprawling football operation was there.

This isn’t your typical home team, the FCS-level Rams, who just completed a 2-10 season. The Huskers walked onto the practice field on a cold and sunny Thursday afternoon, flanked by social media cameras and a host of staff members. A post-practice take-out buffet then greeted the players as they made their way back to downtown Manhattan and spent the evening at a high-profile table tennis club.

“Just looking around and spending time together,” freshman linebacker Vincent Shavers said of more time in New York City. “I’ve never done this before with any other team, so I’m very happy. I’m grateful to them.”

Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind” played on the sound system while Nebraska practiced two days before the Pinstripe Bowl. The Huskers practiced at Joe Moglia Field — Moglia, a Fordham graduate, was once the managing adviser to former NU coach Bo Pelini in 2009 and 2010 — on an artificial surface also shared by Fordham’s football and baseball teams . The baseball press box named after another famous alum, Vin Scully, was just feet away as the visiting Big Ten team ran drills.

The fenced-in campus — just a few blocks from the busy streets of the Bronx — was covered in small piles of snow everywhere. Temperatures in the sun were perhaps around 40°C, while shaded conditions were closer to 20°C.

New Nebraska assistant coaches Daikiel Shorts (receiver) and Phil Simpson (outside linebacker) spoke to a few reporters and some players afterward.

Coach Matt Rhule will speak at noon Friday as part of a pinstripe availability ahead of Saturday’s kickoff at noon Eastern time.
