Nelly and Ashanti enjoy a loving date night at his annual charity ball (Exclusive)

Nelly and Ashanti know how to have a good time.

The couple headed to Nelly’s annual Black and White Charity Ball at the Four Seasons Hotel in his hometown of St. Louis, Missouri, on Sunday, December 15.

“They were playful and loving and told everyone what a good baby KK was,” a source exclusively tells PEOPLE of the new parents, adding that their son “lights up when he’s around his dad.”

At some point in the evening, 44-year-old Ashanti joined 50-year-old Nelly on stage to perform their 2002 hit “What’s Luv.” Then they sang Ashanti’s “Baby” and changed the lyrics to “We made a baby, baby, baby, baby, baby.”

“Make some noise for my damn beautiful wife,” he said on stage.

Throughout the evening, Nelly raised money for Make-A-Wish, granted a 14-year-old’s wish by gifting him a brand new home theater system, and awarded a full scholarship to a Harris-Stowe State University sophomore.

The “Hot in Here” rapper was also given a key to the city with the St. Lunatics. In response to the honor, he announced a festival in collaboration with Metro Boomin to take place in 2025.

In November, the couple opened up to PEOPLE about their lives as new parents to son Kareem Kenkaide Haynes, whose arrival was announced via Instagram in August.

“It’s amazing,” Ashanti said of KK’s presence in her life. “He is a blessing. He is an angel. My life is great right now. I am super blessed, so lucky. I’m madly in love with him.”

Reflecting on how his personality blossomed, Ashanti said he definitely has “dad’s temper.”

“If the bottle isn’t ready – oh boy,” she said.

The Grammy winners first announced they were expecting their first child together in an Instagram video in April. The “Foolish” singer also shared the news beings Shortly after, she revealed not only that she was pregnant, but also that she and Nelly were engaged.

“This new year of my life is a true blessing filled with love, hope and anticipation,” Ashanti told the outlet. “Motherhood is something I’ve been looking forward to and it’s an amazing experience to share this with my family, my fiancé and my loyal fans who have been so supportive of my career.”

According to documents obtained by PEOPLE in June, the couple tied the knot on December 27, 2023.
