According to a joint statement from FIFA and Netflix on Friday, the next two editions of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in the United States will air exclusively on Netflix in 2027 and 2031.

“This is a milestone for sports media rights,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Brazil will host the next tournament in 2027, while the 2031 host has yet to be chosen by FIFA.

“This agreement sends a strong message about the true value of the FIFA Women’s World Cup and global women’s football,” Infantino continued. “FIFA and Netflix’s collaboration makes this a truly historic day for broadcasting and women’s football.”

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Bringing this iconic tournament to Netflix is not just about streaming games, but also about celebrating the players, culture and passion that fuel the rise of women’s sports worldwide,” said Bela Bajaria, Chief Content Officer from Netflix.

This announcement marks the streaming giant’s latest foray into live sports.

Earlier this year, Netflix inked a three-year deal to broadcast the NFL’s Christmas games, starting with two matchups airing on Wednesday when the Kansas City Chiefs take on the Pittsburgh Steelers, followed by a matchup against the Baltimore Ravens and Houston Texans.

Last month, Netflix announced that Beyoncé would perform at the halftime show for the Ravens-Texans game.

“Last year, we decided to make a big bet on Live – tapping into massive fandoms across comedy, reality TV, sports and more,” Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria said when the NFL deal was announced became.

Netflix made a splash in the boxing world in November with its fight between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul, an event previously reserved for pay-per-view.

The streaming platform later said the fight between Tyson and Paul was streamed by 60 million households around the world.

Starting in 2025, Netflix will also be home to WWE’s flagship program Monday Night Raw as part of a 10-year deal worth more than $5 billion.

According to FIFA and Netflix, the upcoming Women’s World Cups “will be the first competition to be fully owned by Netflix, further strengthening the tournament’s status as the largest women’s sporting event in the world.”

Spain celebrates winning the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia.
