New Orleans attack: The investigation into possible connections between Bourbon Street and the Trump Hotel bombing is ongoing

According to authorities, the suspect in the New Orleans truck attack considered killing his friends and family before the attack but decided against it because he believed it would have less serious consequences.

The FBI announced this at a press conference on Thursday. They have identified Shamsud-Din Jabbar as the suspect who allegedly drove a truck into a crowd in New Orleans before being killed in a shootout with police. Authorities are investigating a possible military connection between Jabbar and the Las Vegas suspect, whom law enforcement identified to The Associated Press as Matthew Livelsberger.

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill told Fox News there was evidence that Jabbar worked with accomplices to coordinate the attack. The FBI told Fox News later Thursday that it no longer believes any other suspects were involved in the attack that killed at least 14 people and injured dozens more.

Jabbar had posted videos on social media before his attack expressing his allegiance to the Islamic State. Investigators say Jabbar rented the truck used in the Dec. 30 attack in Houston and then drove to New Orleans on Dec. 31.

“FBI special agents and our law enforcement partners are currently executing a series of court-authorized search warrants in New Orleans and other states,” the FBI said in a statement. “The FBI’s Evidence Response Team continues to investigate the crime scene to meticulously collect all relevant evidence.”

The FBI initially said it did not believe the driver acted alone, but has now revised that assessment. Investigators found weapons in Jabbars as well as two IEDs in refrigerators elsewhere in the French Quarter. The FBI says it obtained footage of Jabbar planting the two devices.

Police also recovered two laptops they believe belonged to Jabbar.

The FBI told members of Congress on Thursday that it had no information about Jabbar before his attack. They also said that while Jabbar said he was “inspired” by ISIS, investigators found no evidence that he was directed by ISIS.

Hospitals in New Orleans treated a total of 37 victims injured in Wednesday’s attack. LCMC Health has not indicated how many of the injured have since been released, nor has it clarified the condition of those still hospitalized.

Jabbar, a Texas native, had previously served in the U.S. military. Authorities are still investigating how and when he became radicalized.

Jabbar served in the Army from March 2007 to January 2015 as a human resources specialist and information technology (IT) specialist.

After active duty, he served as an IT specialist in the Army Reserve from January 2015 to July 2020.

During his term, he deployed to Afghanistan from February 2009 to January 2010.

After leaving the military, Jabbar got a job at Deloitte, earning a salary of about $120,000 a year. However, after two divorces, he ran into financial difficulties.

Authorities searched an AirBnB in New Orleans believed to be connected to Jabbar. They also executed a search warrant at his primary residence in Houston, Texas.

Relatives of Jabbar said he had been behaving erratically in recent months. According to the New York Times, Dwayne Marsh, the husband of Jabbar’s ex-wife, said that they no longer allowed his wife’s daughters to spend time with Jabbar.

The attack prompted authorities to postpone the Sugar Bowl on Wednesday night. The sporting event is now scheduled to take place on Thursday evening, but some officials have called for the event to be postponed further.

Meanwhile, President-elect Trump called on the CIA to join the investigation, calling Jabbar “violent scum” and the current administration “incompetent and corrupt.”

His statement came after a Tesla Cybertruck exploded outside the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas. It remains unclear whether the bombing, which killed one person in the vehicle, is related to the attack in New Orleans. Authorities are investigating a possible military connection between Jabbar and the suspect in the Vegas case, whose identity police declined to disclose.

The FBI is conducting searches of potential residences in Las Vegas and Denver, Colorado, in connection with the Trump Hotel bombing.

“Our country is a disaster, a laughingstock around the world! This is what happens when there are OPEN BORDERS with weak, ineffective and virtually non-existent leadership. The Justice Department, the FBI, and the Democratic prosecutors at the state and local levels have failed to do their job.” Job: They are incompetent and corrupt, having spent all of their waking hours unlawfully attacking their political opponent, ME, instead of “To focus on protecting Americans from violent scum from without and within who have infiltrated every aspect of our government and our nation itself,” Trump wrote on social media.

“Democrats should be ashamed for allowing this to happen to our country. The CIA must intervene NOW before it is too late. The US is collapsing – a violent erosion of security, national security and democracy is taking place.” Only strength and strong leadership will stop it. See you on January 20th. he added.
