New UNC football coach salary

The University of North Carolina has agreed to pay new football coach Bill Belichick $10 million per year, according to a term sheet the university released Thursday afternoon.

Although the agreement is for five years, only the first three years of salary is guaranteed in the event that Belichick is fired without cause.

The annual salary is twice what North Carolina paid recently fired coach Mack Brown. That would make Belichick the sixth-highest paid public school college football coach for the 2025 football season, according to USA TODAY Sports’ annual salary database and contracts obtained through open inquiries.

Among public school coaches, Belichick will trail Georgia’s Kirby Smart, Clemson’s Dabo Swinney, Texas’ Steve Sarkisian, Florida State’s Mike Norvell and Alabama’s Kalen DeBoer. Lincoln Riley of Southern California received $10,043,418 in the 2022 calendar year, according to the university’s most recently available tax records – the only documents available because USC is a private school.

Belichick’s deal also gives him a $100,000 annual expense account and the opportunity to receive $3.5 million per year in bonuses.
