New York Yankees News: Soto bid tops $600 million

The Athlete | Ken Rosenthal and Evan Drellich: The Juan Soto tender is expected to close in the next week or so, and we’re getting our first glimpse of what those offers will look like. According to some sources close to the negotiations, the minimum value of all offers Soto is currently considering is at least $600 million, and all of the main contenders (read: the Yankees, Mets, Red Sox and the Blue Jays) are in this mixture. Soto and his camp are starting to whittle down the overall roster. Don’t expect many leaks from this process, as virtually every team in the bid has no idea where he’ll end up, but it looks like we’re in the endgame now.

SNY | Josh Flanigan: As the Yankees continue their pursuit of Soto, it appears there is no interest in returning some of their other pending free agents. Both Gleyber Torres and Anthony Rizzo expressed interest in returning to the team next year, but the Yankees have prepared other contingencies and have not yet approached their camps for negotiations. The Yankees have been linked to both Pete Alonso and Christian Walker in the first base market, and several reports have surfaced about how high they are on Caleb Durbin and his potential at second base.

FanGraphs | Ben Clemens: This is not an article specifically for the Yankees, but a good article to understand some of the logic of the front office and coaching staff, as well as the rest of the league. Clemens takes us on a financial course and teaches us how to protect ourselves and not take risks in order to get the most out of an opportunity. While it seems like a prudent way to get the sure little win over time (and still works in certain scenarios!), the main problem is that there aren’t an infinite number of scoring opportunities to take advantage of. There are only so many ways to take or maintain leadership. So choose what stands out the most over time. This is a fundamental oversimplification, and Clemons handles the lesson far more eloquently than I do. So take the time to read through them.
