New York’s snow map shows counties hardest hit by a new storm

Another winter storm is bringing more lake snow to New York, with some counties expecting up to 18 inches of snow this week.

Meteorologists with the National Weather Service (NWS) have issued countless weather warnings across New York as a winter storm approaches, bringing gusty winds and heavy snow. The storm comes less than a week after a Thanksgiving weekend storm dumped more than 5 feet (1.5 meters) of snow in parts of New York.

The incoming system will have lower totals, with widespread amounts between 12 and 18 inches expected, NWS Buffalo said.

“A storm system will bring snow, lake effect snow, gusty winds, and blowing snow to the area this afternoon – Thursday night, with the greatest impacts (primarily from blowing snow) occurring late tonight through Thursday,” the bureau posted on X, formerly Twitter. “Lake snow will then continue southeast/east of the lakes through Friday night.”

Up to 12 inches of snow is expected in Jefferson, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie and Wyoming counties, while widespread snow amounts of about 4 inches are predicted for many other counties within the Buffalo forecast region.

NWS meteorologist Jim Mitchell recounted Newsweek that a mix of lake effect and storm snow will fall in Oswego and Lewis counties, with the highest accumulations expected in higher elevation areas. Western New York east of Lake Erie is also expecting heavy snowfall, he said. The NWS map showed amounts of up to 12 inches in that area, although Mitchell said up to 24 inches could fall in higher terrain.

Weather warnings in effect across New York include a Lake Effect Snow Warning, a Winter Storm Warning, Winter Weather Warnings and Wind Warnings.

Similar warnings also apply to parts of Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine and Massachusetts.

Some warnings warned of snow squalls that could occur quickly.

“Light snow will form this afternoon, increasing in intensity this evening. Embedded snow squalls may reduce visibility to near zero at times Thursday morning,” said a winter storm warning in Binghamton, New York. “Winds will become increasingly gusty on Thursday as the event transitions to lake effect snow.”

Several warnings warned of dangerous travel conditions.

“Traveling could be very difficult. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility,” said the NWS office in State College, Pennsylvania. “Strong winds could cause significant damage to trees and power lines.”

NWS Weather Prediction Center meteorologist Cody Snell said earlier Newsweek There is no safe place on the highway during a snow squall, and motorists are urged to drive with caution if they encounter a snow squall.
