NFC playoff picture update: Close battles at the top and bottom

For all but one NFC team, Week 14 is upon us and the playoff race is heating up. Earlier this week, the Detroit Lions punched their ticket to the postseason with a win over the Green Bay Packers. However, they didn’t put any additional distance between themselves and the other top two NFC teams, as both the Vikings and Eagles picked up wins on Sunday.

Meanwhile, as the NFC playoff race winds down, some teams fighting for the final playoff spots made statements in Week 14. Let’s look at the latest playoff standings in the NFC.

NFC North standings:

  1. Lions: 12-1
  2. Vikings: 11-2
  3. Packers: 9-4

  4. Bears: 4-9

For the NFC North, this has essentially become a two-team race. The Packers now have less than a one percent chance of winning the division, so the Lions’ sole focus should be on the Vikings. Things could change as early as next week when the Lions face the 10-3 Bills and the Vikings host the 4-9 Bears.

Here’s a look at each team’s remaining schedule:

Lions:

  • vs. Bills (10-3)
  • at Bears (4-9)
  • at 49ers (6-7)
  • vs. Vikings (11-2)

Vikings:

  • vs Bears (4-9)
  • at Seahawks (8-5)
  • vs. Packers (9-4)
  • at the Lions (12-1)

  1. Lions: 12-1
  2. Eagles: 11-2
  3. Seahawks: 8-5

  4. Buccaneers: 7-6

The Lions are still just one game ahead of the Eagles. Philly narrowly got past the Panthers this week, and they have two tough games in a row in the next two weeks: against the Steelers and at the Commanders. Maybe the Eagles’ nine-game winning streak will end somewhere there.

If the Lions win the division, they are guaranteed a top two seed. The Seahawks could mathematically tie with the Lions in the overall record, but the Lions have the direct tiebreaker.

With the Falcons’ loss and the Buccaneers’ win, Tampa now occupies the final playoff spot among the division winners. And the Wild Card race is suddenly more interesting…

Wildcard race (top 3 preliminary):

5. Vikings: 11-2
6. Packers: 9-4
7. Commanders: 8-5
8. Rams: 7-6
9. Cardinals: 6-7
10. Falcons: 6-7
11. 49ers: 6-7
12. Cowboys: 5-7

The Rams and 49ers picked up some convincing wins in Week 14, but both remain on the sidelines. If the Commanders or Packers fall in the final four games of the season, it could open a window for both teams to get into the postseason. The Rams have the best chance as they are only one game behind. One thing to keep in mind, however, is LA and San Francisco’s terrible conference record (4-5). That could be a crucial tiebreaker considering the Commanders’ conference record is currently 5-3.

Mock draft

13. Saints: 5-8
14. Bears: 4-9
15. Panthers: 3-10
16. Giants: 2-11

According to Tankathon, the Bears are currently holding the 10th overall pick in the draft.
