NFL.com reveals what Broncos country should be most thankful for

The Denver Broncos I have a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving week. The Broncos are currently 7-5 in 7th place and have a decent lead over the Broncos Miami Dolphins, Indianapolis ColtsAnd Cincinnati Bengals.

There’s still a lot of work to be done, but the odds are increasing that Denver will overcome its eight-year postseason deficit. Broncos Country can also be grateful for the combination of the Walton-Penner Group, the richest owner in the NFL, coupled with the offensive mind and impressive coaching of Sean Payton, who quickly and decisively changed the culture in Denver.

However, the NFL is more about players than games. Which brings up what Broncos Country is most likely grateful for this season: finally having an answer at quarterback in Bo Nix.

After years of searching for a long-term quarterback solution, Denver at least has a viable starter on a cost-controlled rookie contract. If Nix can maintain this style of play, he will be a steal for the foreseeable future.

NFL.com’s Jeffri Chadiha agrees that while Broncos Country has a lot to be thankful for right now, it starts and ends with the former Oregon Duck at quarterback.

“It might as well be defensive coordinator Vance Joseph because of what he’s done with this unit, but Nix has to be the guy here. He was the least heralded quarterback selected in the first round of this year’s draft, and it felt like a reach when the Broncos took him 12th overall. Nix is playing so well these days – he’s thrown 16 touchdown passes and just two interceptions in the last 10 games – that he’s in the hunt. More importantly, the Broncos are paying a heavy price this season for firing Russell Wilson and the team’s commitment paid “to swallow $39 million of Wilson’s salary. Looks like they have a good option under center after all,” Chadiha wrote.

Not only were the Broncos forced to swallow Wilson’s salary, but due to the details of the contract, they were also forced to play with a dead cap hit of $53 million this season as of publication (and $32 million in year 2025). The reduced costs are hurting Denver’s ability to develop Nix, but given the value added to his contract over the next four seasons, the Broncos and Payton have plenty of time to not only build a playoff-caliber team around their quarterback, but potentially one that could compete for the Lombardi Trophy.

Nix may be one of the older quarterbacks drafted, with a historic 61 games started in college. While the question of his potential ceiling can only be answered with time and games played in the league, he has far exceeded expectations this season and continues to improve.

Nix’s arm and athleticism seems to be more of an advantage when most believed they came from Oregon, and his ability to avoid sacks and protect the football without running a simple dink-and-dunk offense cannot be overstated.

The AFC is a conference full of superstar quarterbacks. To paraphrase PaytonIt may be a little early to measure the rookie quarterback for a gold jacket, but Nix’s play provides plenty of reason for optimism in Broncos Country and something for the fan base to be thankful for this holiday season.
