NFL news: Daniel Jones signs with Vikings, not Raiders

The Las Vegas Raiders were reportedly interested in signing former New York Giants starting quarterback Daniel Jones but were unable to land him.

According to multiple reports, Jones has signed with the Minnesota Vikings practice squad.

The end result is no surprise. Fox Sports (which terminated Jones’ contract with Minnesota) reported Monday night that Jones had removed the Raiders from consideration after clearing waivers and becoming a free agent earlier in the day.

NFL Media reported Sunday that the Las Vegas Raiders would be among the teams expected to pursue Jones. The report states that the Raiders staff liked Jones and the team could give him a chance to finish this season to promote him as a candidate for the starting bridge position next year. The team is expected to try to recruit a quarterback in early 2025.

However, ESPN reported that Jones had no interest in finishing the series with a non-playoff contender and that he wanted to reset and sign with a contender. The Raiders are 2-9 while Minnesota is 9-2.

It was understandable why the Raiders would be interested in Jones. One could argue that he would be an improvement over the Raiders’ current group of quarterbacks Aidan O’Connell and Desmond Ridder.

It would also have been beneficial to take a look at Jones before free agency. But at the end of the day, Jones is a marginal talent who probably wouldn’t have had much of an impact on the team late in the game.

So it’s not a big missed opportunity. And if the Raiders want to consider Jones as a potential bridge quarterback again in 2025, they can do so in March.
