NFL News, Injury Updates: Seahawks QB Geno Smith is out with a knee injury as the Lions are decimated by injuries

Three more teams officially clinched playoff spots on Sunday, leaving only a handful of spots available for teams as the NFL regular season begins.

The Houston Texans, Pittsburgh Steelers and Minnesota Vikings all clinched postseason spots on Sunday, although the Steelers actually lost to the Philadelphia Eagles and the Vikings are not playing. The Vikings will close out Week 15 of the season in one of two games on Monday night.

While things are slowly improving in the playoffs, some teams – including both the Detroit Lions and Seattle Seahawks – could be in trouble.

The Seahawks stumbled badly in their 30-13 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night. Quarterback Geno Smith suffered a knee injury in the third quarter of the game after taking a nasty blow to his lower leg in mid-air. Smith landed awkwardly and limped off the field shortly afterwards.

Smith did not return to the game and the Seahawks went with Sam Hartman the rest of the way. While it’s still unclear how serious the injury is, Hartman has struggled in Smith’s absence. And the Seahawks were in a tie for first place in the NFC West with the Los Angeles Rams after the loss, so they could end up missing the playoffs entirely if Smith is out for an extended period of time.

His injury couldn’t have come at a worse time.

The Detroit Lions lost a shootout to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, ending an 11-game winning streak for easily the best team the city has seen in decades.

But it wasn’t the loss that was the worst for the Lions. It was the injuries that kept piling up. The Lions lost both cornerbacks Carlton Davis III and Khalil Dorsey to injuries in the game. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Davis suffered a jaw injury that will sideline him for six weeks, and defensive lineman Alim McNeill suffered a torn ACL.

Running back David Montgomery is also reportedly out indefinitely with an MCL injury he suffered in Sunday’s loss. According to ESPNMontgomery is undergoing further testing but could be out for the season.

These injuries follow a series of injuries elsewhere that have already plagued their defense, including defensive end Aiden Hutchinson, defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo, linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez and linebacker Alex Anzalone, to name a few.

The team is incredibly banged up, whether Campbell wants to admit it or not. As the regular season comes to a close and the Lions fight for the top spot in the NFC, injuries keep coming.

McNeill appeared in 14 games this season, recording 25 tackles, 7 tackles for loss and 3 1/2 sacks. Davis had two interceptions and 56 total tackles in 13 games this season, his first in Detroit.
