NFL playoff picture: The Broncos improve to sixth place and move closer to a postseason berth

The Denver Broncos had a must-win game against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. If they won, they would have a 91% chance of making the playoffs, while if they lost, they would be at 50% and at risk of missing the playoffs again. Well, thankfully the Broncos fought back and earned a 31-13 victory over the Colts that improved them to a 9-5 record and moved them to sixth place in the AFC.

Since the Chargers, Dolphins and Colts all lost this week and the Broncos won, it was a best-case scenario for them. A Chargers loss dropped them to No. 6, while they gained ground in Nos. 8 and 9 as their postseason hopes fade. With a win over the Colts, the Broncos now have a 91% chance of making the playoffs, according to NFL.com.

This Thursday night, the Broncos will travel to Los Angeles to take on the reeling Chargers in a game that will see them clinch their first postseason berth since winning Super Bowl 50.

Look at the FanDuel sports betting odds for the Broncos’ playoff chancesAfter their win over the Colts, the Broncos have a great chance of making it into the playoffs.

These FanDuel sports betting odds suggest that the Broncos are currently the favorites to make the postseason. They are 9-5 on the year and are just one win away from securing a playoff spot. These reflect the likelihood of the Broncos securing a postseason spot in the near future.

Overall, the Broncos are in a good position to secure a playoff spot and could do so as early as Thursday night.

Looking ahead

Let’s take a look at the upcoming schedules of all three Wild Card teams and the Colts, who appear to be the Broncos’ only competitor for the final Wild Card spot.

5. Seeds: Baltimore Ravens (9-5)

99 percent chance of making the playoffs

Upcoming schedule: vs. Steelersat Texanand against Browns

The Ravens easily defeated the Giants on Sunday and have now all but secured a spot in the postseason. They have a 9-5 record and are above the sixth-seeded Broncos in a tiebreaker. At the end of the year they still have three difficult games ahead of them. Next Sunday is a division game between the Ravens and Steelers, followed by a road game against the Texans and the finale against the rival Browns.

Essentially, they are locked into a postseason spot, but where they end up in the seedings will be decided in the coming weeks.

6th seed: Denver Broncos (9-5)

91% chance of making the playoffs

Upcoming schedule: at Chargers (TNF), at Bengals and against Chiefs

The Broncos ended their BYE with a tough win over the Colts, a must-win game for both teams. A win improved the Broncos’ chances of making the playoffs to 91%, and they moved up to sixth place due to a loss by the Chargers. The Broncos can secure a spot in the postseason with a win over the Chargers on Thursday Night Football.

Their remaining games are a road game against the Bengals and a home game against the Chiefs in the finale, where they may have to rest their starters. The Broncos will likely clinch a playoff spot one way or another in the coming days or weeks, but they have a chance to improve their standing in the AFC in the next three games.

7th place: Los Angeles Chargers (8-6)

86% chance of making the playoffs

Upcoming schedule: against Broncos, at Patriots and at Raiders

The Chargers have lost three of their last four games and are coming off a tough loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Now, on a short week, they host the Denver Broncos, who have won four straight games on Thursday Night Football. This game is for seeding purposes as both teams are currently comfortably in the playoffs.

If the Chargers lose, they could be in danger, but they still have winnable games left at the end of the year against the Patriots and Raiders and beat the Broncos earlier this season. They’re weak and dealing with injuries, so we’ll see how they do on Thursday night when they host the Broncos.

About life support

8th Place – Indianapolis Colts (6-8): After a costly loss to the Broncos on Sunday, the Colts have an 11% chance of making the playoffs. They need to win to keep their postseason hopes alive, but now they need to win and hope for a miracle to happen. They have a favorable schedule, so we’ll see how things pan out for them.

9th place – Miami Dolphins (6-8): They were in must-win territory last Sunday, and like the Colts, they didn’t get it done. They were defeated by the Houston Texans and now have a 7% chance of making the playoffs. Like the Colts, they need to win and hope for a miracle, but they have a difficult road ahead that will make that difficult for them. They have a home game against the 49ers, followed by cold weather away games against the Browns and Jets. Things are looking bleak for the Dolphins.

10. Seeds – Cincinnati Bengals (6-8): Joe Burrow is having a career year and the Bengals offense looks dangerous. However, the Bengals’ inconsistent play, poor defense and the fact that they were on the wrong end of some one-score games leave the Bengals with the question “What if?” They only have a 5 percent chance of making the playoffs, and they need to win AND get a lot of help to have any chance of making it. They are all but eliminated from the postseason.
