NFL playoff picture: The Washington Commanders are on the verge of winning the playoffs

The Washington Commanders entered Week 17 on a mission, defeating the Atlanta Falcons, doing their job and securing a spot in the playoffs. The question now is what place they will end up in and who they will play against on Super Wildcard Weekend.

Washington got some help on the block late in the afternoon from the Minnesota Vikings. They defeated their division rival, the Green Bay Packers, and moved into the No. 1 spot in the NFC. That could change tonight when the Detroit Lions visit the already eliminated San Francisco 49ers. The No. 1 seed in the NFC and the NFC North crown will likely come down to the Lions vs. Vikings game in Week 18.

The Philadelphia Eagles won the NFC East yesterday by demolishing the Dallas Cowboys with their 2nd and 3rd line QBs. Thanks to last week’s loss to the Commanders, they are the No. 2 seed. The NFC South is still up for grabs after the Falcons’ loss.

The Washington Commanders are currently the sixth seed in the NFC, but there is still a lot that could change between now and the start of the playoffs. If the season ended today, they would travel to the West Coast to play the Los Angeles Rams. Washington is ahead of the Packers in the tiebreaker (record against the NFC), but they have to have the same record, or rather, for that to count.

6/7 place in the NFC

Washington wins, Green Bay loses

Nothing changes and Washington is the sixth seed

Washington wins, Green Bay wins

Nothing changes and Washington is the sixth seed

Washington loses, Green Bay wins

Packers are the 6th seed, Commanders are the 7th seed

3rd/4th place in the NFC

Los Angeles wins, Tampa Bay loses

Rams are the 3rd seed, Bucs are the 4th seed

Los Angeles wins, Tampa Bay wins

Bucs are the 3rd seed, Rams are the 4th seed

The most likely outcome is that the Washington Commanders take care of business in Arlington and hold on to sixth place. If that happens, a trip to Los Angeles could be in her future. If not, they get a rematch against their Week 1 opponent, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. If they are defeated by the Cowboys, there will be a rematch against the Eagles in Philadelphia.
