The end of Brock Purdy’s third NFL season is approaching and the final year of his rookie contract with the San Francisco 49ers is just around the corner.

According to ESPN’s Nick Wagoner, both Purdy and the 49ers are “looking to negotiate a lucrative long-term deal this offseason.” According to Wagoner, “Purdy’s situation is complicated.”

Purdy had a decent year with 3,487 yards, 17 touchdowns and 10 interceptions for a quarterback rating of 65.9. He also rushed for 311 yards and added four scores on the ground.

However, those numbers are nowhere near as good as his 2023 stats. Last year he had 4,280 passing yards, 31 touchdowns and 11 interceptions with an NFL-best quarterback rating of 73.4. Wagoner also noted Purdy’s poor performance in inclement weather, as he went 2-3 with a QBR of 49.7 and a completion percentage of 57.4 in his five starts in rain or snow.

To prevent Purdy’s numbers from dipping in 2024, he had to be without Brandon Aiyuk, the 49ers’ leading receiver in 2023, for most of the season. Aiyuk, who had 1,342 yards last year, played in just seven games before retiring suffered a torn cruciate ligament at the end of the season.

Additionally, star running back Christian McCaffrey only played four games due to some injuries.

It’s hard to fully assess Purdy’s play considering injuries to some of his best weapons, but San Francisco may need to do so this offseason.

With his current contract, a four-year, $3.737 million deal, Purdy is one of the best players in the league. The 49ers will soon have to decide whether to pay him like the quarterback who led them to the Super Bowl or the one who had an average year without his top targets.
