Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is one of the most sought-after coaching candidates on the market for the third straight year, but reportedly could choose to stay in his current position once again.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that it is not guaranteed that Johnson will take the head coaching position this time around, as he has shown resistance to parting ways with the Lions in the past.

“Some people I’ve spoken to around the league believe Johnson could return to Detroit. And it doesn’t appear to be a leverage game,” Fowler explained. “That’s where he’s been for the last two cycles, and that could be the case again if his ideal destination as head coach isn’t there.”

Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports reported Wednesday that Johnson has virtual interviews scheduled with the Las Vegas Raiders and New England Patriots on Friday and the Chicago Bears and Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday. Every team has its own level of intrigue, but Johnson was never in a rush to make the transition from offensive coordinator to head coach.

The 38-year-old told Dave Birkett about it Detroit Free Press in May that he wouldn’t leave Detroit unless he found the right situation.

“I won’t do it just for the sake of doing it. I love what I’m doing right now. I love it. I love it. I love where I am. “My family loves where we are,” Johnson said. “I love the people we’re doing it with, and so I’m not ready to go the other way yet unless I really have a good feel for how it’s going to turn out.”

If Johnson decides to leave teams at the altar again this recruiting cycle, many fans will be disappointed because they missed the chance to have one of the most innovative offensive minds coaching their team.
