NFL Week 14 Preview: 5 predictions for the Seahawks-Cardinals rematch

Good morning, Seattle Seahawks fans! It’s Week 14 and the Seahawks are on their way to winning the NFC West. That lead could disappear if they lose to the Arizona Cardinals in Glendale. A win (plus some help from the Buffalo Bills) could give Seattle something of a solid foothold in the division.

Before we get to this week’s Cardinals return game predictions, Let’s recap last week’s predictions for the New York Jets game.

Bold Prediction: Geno Smith’s interception streak ends

Bingo!

Seahawks offensive prediction: Kenneth Walker III breaks up a run longer than 20 yards

The waiting continues. And that won’t happen this week either.

Seahawks Defense Prediction: Riq Woolen gets Aaron Rodgers

Who needs Riq when there’s a big cat?

Foe Prediction: Quinnen Williams celebrates and records multiple sacks

Definitely disrupted the running game, but believe it or not didn’t have a sack. His brother Quincy Williams fired Geno Smith.

Match Prediction: Geno Smith leads in last-minute ugly comeback win

Technically he did. None of his completions actually resulted in a first down, but this was an ugly comeback win and he is credited with a game-winning performance. I had the Seahawks 19-14 and lost both teams by a touchdown.

Now let’s get to the card rematch!

Bold Prediction: Seahawks special teams force a takeaway

After one of the worst special teams games in NFL history, the Seahawks reshuffled the lineup by removing Dee Williams and Laviska Shenault Jr. from the game. Unexpectedly, they may have to rely on the services of Ty Zentner with Michael Dickson injured. Seattle’s special teams haven’t been good for most of the season, but maybe that will change soon, just from a return game perspective.

But my bold prediction for this week is that the Seahawks turn the tables and force a turnover on the Cardinals special teams. Will former Seahawks running back DeeJay Dallas drop the ball on Sunday? I think so. Let’s see something positive from this special forces unit (other than Jason Myers and Michael Dickson)!

Seahawks Offensive Prediction: Jaxon Smith-Njigba finally catches his first road touchdown

JSN has scored eight touchdowns in his young career, all of which came at home. He came pretty close to scoring a road touchdown against the San Francisco 49ers a few weeks ago, and last season his touchdown against the Dallas Cowboys was missed (unjustly for me). The fact is, he hasn’t caught a road TD yet and the Seahawks haven’t thrown many touchdown passes this year. I believe the drought ends today! He has been playing exceptional football since Week 9 and should be the focal point of the passing game again.

Seahawks Defense Prediction: Leonard Williams keeps his sack streak going

It’s been three years since Leonard Williams last recorded at least one sack in three consecutive games. With 4.5 sacks in the last two games, including 2.5 against Kyler Murray, it’s tempting to say he’ll get multiple sacks for the third straight game, but I don’t necessarily think that will happen. He’ll still put up an impressive performance, recording at least one sack this season to get close to double figures. “Big Cat” is playing at an All-Pro level and I don’t think he will be denied access to the backfield.

Opponent Prediction: The Cardinals force at least two Seahawks turnovers on offense

Seattle has only committed two offensive turnovers during its three-game winning streak, both on very poor interceptions by Geno Smith. The other turnovers occurred on special teams against the New York Jets. Arizona hasn’t been a strong team this season, but the defense has committed at least one turnover in each of the last three games. Given the ongoing pass protection issues, I wouldn’t be shocked if Geno threw another interception and/or suffered his first strip-sack lost fumble of the year. He was thrown out by Zaven Collins in the first meeting, but recovered his fumble.

Oddly enough, the Seahawks have handled the ball much better on offense on the road than at home, but I think the Cardinals defense’s trickery will lead to several mistakes…which hopefully won’t be costly.

Game Prediction: The Seahawks make too many offensive errors and lose to the Cardinals

The Seahawks win with regularity in Glendale. If history is anything to go by, this should be another victory. I don’t like how the offense looked after the Atlanta Falcons game, and I feel like they are making too many mistakes in terms of turnovers and execution errors for them not to be punished cruelly. I’m down on offense in a way I didn’t expect this season.

While Seattle’s defense has improved significantly, Arizona’s has also improved significantly, particularly along the defensive line. The Seahawks seemed to have few answers to the Cardinals’ simulated pressure and coverage obfuscations, and the running game really didn’t do much the first time around. There are too many “tells” in Ryan Grubb’s offense that lead to broken play and strong predictability.

I just have a feeling that Seattle is going to have one of those “fumble and figure out” moments where the offense has too many untimely sacks, turnovers, and/or mistakes in the red zone that they can’t escape by being stingy on the defense . Arizona wins 23-17 and the Seahawks may need to win three of their last four games to make the postseason.
