Nick Nurse and Sixers explain what went wrong in loss to Warriors

The Philadelphia 76ers looked to bounce back when they visited the Golden State Warriors on Thursday. It gave them an opportunity to quickly get back on track after their loss in Wednesday’s loss to the Sacramento Kings.

However, the night began for them the way things ended in Sacramento. The Sixers committed five turnovers in the first quarter, shot just 7 of 21 from the floor and 0 of 7 from deep, while the Warriors blew an 18-point lead in the first quarter en route to a rather easy 139-point score. 105 win over the Sixers.

“Obviously we had a little bit of an energy problem tonight (Thursday), but I think it was really caused a little bit by both sides,” coach Nick Nurse told reporters after the loss. “I thought we didn’t have that. “Offensively, we established ourselves very early, tried to shut them down early, and that just got us into transition.”

The Sixers seemed just a step or two slow all night. The Warriors fended off open attacks from three lines, got into the game with ease and were narrowly superior to the Sixers in all areas.

“Part of what they wanted to do tonight was chase after each other and just in general, and we came back late,” Nurse added. “They moved a lot faster than we did. We were one step behind where we were at both ends and we just dug ourselves into a huge hole and it just kept going.”

The Sixers weren’t physical enough on Thursday and their lack of defensive cohesion allowed the exit of Steph Curry. The superstar guard had 30 points and shot a perfect 8-for-8 from distance – most of which were wide open, something that can’t happen to the best 3-point shooter the game has ever seen.

“I think they deserve a lot of credit,” Joel Embiid added. “They put us in rotation a lot, and when Steph makes shots like that and you get two on the ball, they make the right plays over and over again. The other guys are making shots too, then it will be hard to stop.

Although the defense wasn’t good at all on Thursday, the play on defense was one of the main reasons for the Sixers’ turnaround. They tried on that end of the floor, but for some reason it just wasn’t there against the Warriors.

“Honestly, I think it was just one of those games,” Paul George said. “We’ve played great so far. I have to watch what happened in real time, but yeah, I think it was just one of those games. We didn’t play well tonight.”

The Sixers will look to bounce back on Saturday when they finish the 6-game road trip against the Brooklyn Nets.
