Nicole Wallace on trust, “Shady Partners” and Culpa Tuya

The first film adaptation of The Culpables trilogy by Mercedes Ron. Culpa Mia (My Fault) was an instant success. Despite being shot in Spanish and centering on a forbidden love story between Nick Lester (Gabriel Guevara) and his new stepsister Noah Morgan (Nicole Wallace), the film became one of Prime Video Australia’s most-watched titles in over 190 countries.

At the heart of the franchise is the question of guilt: who is to blame for the drama that has unfolded? It’s a topic that’s hotly debated among fans of the books. And as a second part Culpa Tuya (Your Fault) drops on the streaming platform, fans are once again faced with the same question.

When we last saw Nick and Noah, they had overcome their challenges and decided to be together, but in Culpa Tuya We see that not everyone is happy with the coupling.

In addition to the changes that come with work and study, Noah and Nick are faced with the surprise appearance of a vengeful ex-girlfriend and Nick’s mother.

In this new, challenging chapter of their romance, the question of guilt arises again, but as the series author tells it ELLE Australia, the answer is not easy.

“I think everyone is guilty of something,” Mercedes tells us, then adds with a laugh: “So I won’t say who’s to blame because they (the fans) will hate me.”

The idea that blame and guilt doesn’t just lie with one person will play a role in the third film’s story. Culpa Nuestra (Our fault).

“I think everyone makes mistakes in this movie, in this book. They have to learn to get out of it and that’s what we want to see in the third film,” she teases.

The relationship between Noah and Nick not only faces increasing challenges in the second film, but its dynamics also change. Where Culpa Mia explored lust, longing and forbidden love, Culpa Tuya deals with trust and betrayal.

When it comes to portraying that evolution and having that exact confidence in your acting partner, Nicole says it’s less about who you work with and more about yourself.

“There are two things; “Knowing the person, how they behave, what they are like on set and how you can work with them, and then there is trust in yourself,” says Nicole.

“I think when you trust yourself, it doesn’t really matter what you have in front of you, because you know that you can do a good job, even if you have to deal with a wall like that,” she laughs.

In fact, Nicole felt like she could understand Noah’s journey from the first film to now, where he was trusting himself.

“Noah completely trusts himself in this film, which I don’t think was the case in the first film. I think it’s the same for me,” she says.

She adds: “If I have a great partner and I don’t trust myself, it won’t work. And if I have a shady partner but trust myself, it will be great. I think that’s very important.”

Culpa Tuya will be available to stream on Prime Video starting December 27th.
