An injury-plagued season continued for the San Francisco 49ers, with only one game remaining on the schedule.

Niners quarterback Brock Purdy injured his right elbow with less than two minutes left in the team’s 40-34 loss to the Detroit Lions on Monday night.

Purdy said his elbow was “on fire” and he would undergo an MRI on Tuesday, although initial tests of his UCL came back normal.

San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan said he believed it was a “nerve issue” but offered few details because Purdy’s status for the team’s season finale against the Arizona Cardinals was uncertain.

Purdy was sacked by Lions safety Brian Branch with 1:36 to play and quickly trotted to the sideline. He was replaced by Joshua Dobbs, who finished the game. Purdy threw the ball a few times on the sideline but quickly shook his head to let the coaching staff know he couldn’t return, appearing emotional in the moment.

This is particularly concerning given that Purdy suffered a memorable UCL tear in the 2022 NFC Championship game. Purdy underwent surgery and a lengthy offseason rehab.

“You think about an elbow injury from a few years ago, but talking to the doctors, it just came out that he was hit in the right place,” Shanahan said.

“Hopefully it will be okay.”

Purdy, who is entering the final season of his rookie contract and is expected to receive a sizable extension, completed 27 of 35 passes for a season-high 377 yards, three touchdowns and two costly interceptions in the second half.

“It seemed like he had a pretty good night, other than those two picks,” Shanahan said.

Purdy missed a game earlier this season with a shoulder injury, making him one of San Francisco’s star players to miss games this year. These include Brandon Aiyuk, Christian McCaffrey, Nick Bosa, Trent Williams and many, many more.

While the Niners are out of playoff contention, Purdy’s injury is more than just a symbol of the season’s lull, as it raises concerns as the 25-year-old enters a crucial offseason.
