Nintendo finally reveals its next-gen console and confirms the Switch 2 name

Nintendo has finally announced its successor to the Nintendo Switch, the Nintendo Switch 2.

In a video below, Nintendo demonstrated the functionality of the next-gen console in vague terms and announced more information via Nintendo Direct on April 2nd.

Unfortunately, Nintendo hasn’t announced a release date for the Switch 2, but said the console will be available in 2025. Nintendo also hasn’t announced a price. In fact, there are still a number of details that we don’t know yet, such as the launch lineup of the software. However, the video showed a new Mario Kart.

Rumors about Nintendo’s next system have been persistent for several years, and have come to a head in recent weeks as details about the console’s physical form and even its motherboard were leaked via various accessory manufacturers. Notably, this revelation confirms many of the details that leakers had recently agreed upon, including that the console is essentially a slightly larger Nintendo Switch with a magnetically connected Joy-Con and the obvious ability to use the Joy-Con as a Mouse to use.

We also learned from Nintendo themselves late last year that the Nintendo Switch 2 is backwards compatible, and the video confirms that the Switch 2 will play both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, as well as exclusive Switch 2 games. However, certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.

Nintendo will also host Nintendo Switch 2 Experience events where consumers can try out Nintendo Switch 2 in cities around the world. A Nintendo Account is required to participate.
