Nintendo has finally revealed the Nintendo Switch 2, the successor to the original Nintendo Switch, in a surprise first-look trailer. Rumors about the new console have been around for years, and its release on NBC Select is highly anticipated, as the original Nintendo Switch is one of our long-time favorite handheld gaming consoles.

The Nintendo Switch 2, revealed

Nintendo didn’t reveal too many details in the first look trailer – it’s just visuals and there’s no press release with detailed specifications like screen resolution or processing power.

What we can say for sure is that the Switch 2 is bigger than the original. Both the screen and controllers are larger and beefier than before.

The controllers appear to snap onto the sides of the console, possibly with magnets. The original Switch Joy-Con controllers can be pushed to the sides using integrated rails. The controllers are also now black with red and blue color accents around the control sticks and edges.

The new console features a larger, longer stand that looks much sturdier than the original Switch’s tiny corner stand. The dock also appears to be redesigned, although it’s difficult to glean specifics from the trailer.

The console will launch sometime in 2025. Pricing wasn’t mentioned and Nintendo will announce more details and host hands-on events in April.

Do Nintendo Switch games work on Switch 2?

Yes. Nintendo said the Switch 2 will play both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, as well as new Switch 2 titles. Certain titles may not be supported or may not be fully compatible depending on the brand.
