Nintendo will reportedly unveil Switch 2 this week

Nintendo Switch 2 will reportedly be revealed this Thursday, January 16th.

This comes from previously reliable podcast Nate the Hate, who claims that a reveal trailer planned by Nintendo will focus on the Switch 2 hardware, with a software presentation coming later in late February or early March.

“I can tell you that Nintendo Switch 2 will be revealed next week… I’m told Switch 2 will be revealed on Thursday, January 16th… in just a few days,” they said.

“I’ve heard that the reveal itself will focus almost entirely on the console itself. There will be no presence of games. Depending on how the trailer is put together, there might be a game in progress on the screen, but the software won’t be the focus.”

The two-part reveal plan would follow the way Nintendo showed off the original Nintendo Switch and would be consistent with what was told to VGC about Nintendo’s plans for unveiling the Switch 2.

Switch was first announced in 2016 with a hardware trailer, which was followed by a full reveal the following January announcing games and release information. Although Nintendo didn’t officially announce the games at the initial reveal, titles like Mario Odyssey were shown on the fly.

Nate the Hate speculates that Switch 2 could release in May or June of this year – which matches what VGC has heard from its own sources – and that a new version of Mario Kart could be available at launch, followed by a 3D Mario , which will be released during the 2025 holiday season.

Third-party releases will reportedly include Final Fantasy 7 Remake. According to Nate the Hate, Ubisoft plans to release Assassin’s Creed Mirage for Switch 2 and Konami will port Metal Gear Sold Delta.

Nintendo has already confirmed plans to unveil the next console in the current fiscal year, which ends in March 2025.

VGC reported in the summer of 2023 that the console was already in the hands of key development partners and that Nintendo was aiming for a release in 2024. However, the system’s launch is believed to have been delayed internally to avoid shortages and it is now widely expected to launch later this year.

Switch 2 was the subject of a spate of alleged leaks this month, most of which came from CES in Las Vegas. The focus is on accessories manufacturer Genki, which supposedly showed off an exact replica of Nintendo’s next system.

Alleged images of the Switch 2’s Joy-Cons also went online this month. If authentic, they confirm previous claims that the Switch 2 Joy-Cons will be slightly larger and feature a magnetic connection.

Previously, alleged images of Switch 2’s internal hardware components appeared on Reddit. If accurate, the images appear to confirm previous hardware spec rumors that suggest the new console will once again be powered by Nvidia hardware.
