No. 2 UConn opens BIG EAST play against Georgetown

STORRS, Conn. – The second-ranked UConn women’s basketball team (8-1) begins BIG EAST play against Georgetown (6-4) on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the XL Center. The game will air on SNY and the UConn Sports Network from Learfield (FOX Sports 97-9).

Sunday is Superhero Day and Junior Husky Club Day. UConn will celebrate heroes in the community and members of the Junior Husky Club. There are fewer than 1,000 tickets left for the Huskies’ BIG EAST opener.

UConn suffered its first loss of the season at No. 8 Notre Dame last Thursday, 79-68. Redshirt senior Paige Bueckers led the Huskies with 25 points in the game.

UConn won both the BIG EAST regular season and tournament titles last season and went undefeated in its league games. The Huskies have won 30 regular season conference titles, including 23 as members of the BIG EAST.

The Huskies have won every conference regular season and tournament title since returning to the BIG EAST in 2020.

The Huskies are 55-6 all-time against Georgetown. UConn has won the last 38 meetings between the teams. PhD student Azzi Fudds Mother Katie played at Georgetown from 1998 to 2001.

Georgetown fell to George Mason 63-55 last Monday. This season, Kelsey Ransom leads the Hoyas with 21.1 points per game. Ariel Jenkins is averaging 13.1 points and 10.0 rebounds per game. Darnell Haney is in his first season as head coach at Georgetown.

Following Sunday’s game, the Huskies have two more ranking games before the holiday break. UConn faces No. 18 Iowa State in the Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase at Mohegan Sun on Tuesday before hosting No. 5 USC next Saturday at a sold-out XL Center.
