1:44 p.m. left: Washington State’s drive begins at its own 32-yard line

Zevi Eckhaus, the 2023 Big South Offensive Player of the Year, is expected to get the starting quarterback spot.

Eckhaus gets rid of the ball pressure and converts the third ball to move the chain. Kyle Williams then forces a missed tackle from Clarence Lewis and picks up another first down.

Williams gets past freshman cornerback Davien Kerr, who went down, and freshman safety Braheem Long gets to deep center late as the Cougars set up the first-and-goal push.

Eckhaus strikes.

The Cougars covered 68 yards on eight plays in 3:57.

14:54 remaining: Syracuse drive begins at its own 26-yard line

Trebor Pena takes a pitch 17 yards for a chunk run on the first play from scrimmage.

McCord misses his first two attempts to reach 3rd and 10th. McCord passes the pass to LeQuint Allen, who drops the pass.

Syracuse will punt.

Before the game

Update: 7:45 p.m.: Former Syracuse quarterback Donovan McNabb is in attendance.

Syracuse football is wrapping up its first season under Fran Brown and seeking a rare 10-win season in Friday night’s Holiday Bowl.

Brown, a native of Camden, New Jersey, delivered as strong a debut season as one would have expected from someone who had no prior coordination experience, let alone the opportunity to become a head coach.

This is the second bowl trip Brown has made since getting the SU job. He was on the sidelines during last year’s 45-0 loss in the Boca Raton Bowl, along with prized quarterback transfer Kyle McCord.

Brown and McCord have led SU’s return to the national polls, with McCord leading the country in passing after transferring from Ohio State.

Others who joined in Friday were there when the program plummeted with a 1-10 record in the Covid-shortened 2020 season before steadily rebuilding the program back to good standing.

Here is the list of inactives for the Orange (the players listed ended the team’s two-deep regular season):

DT Rashard Perry

DE Chase Simmons

EN Fadil Diggs

Secure. Devin Grant

Secure. Berry Buxton III

TE Dan Villari

CB Jayden Bellamy (transfer)

Secure. Jaeden Gould (transfer)

A win Friday would give the Orange just their third 10-win season this century, and it will come with a trophy, a splash of eggnog and a familiar sense of optimism that last spread through the fan base as the program celebrated its 10th won game six years ago.

And when the final seconds pass, a new countdown and a new challenge begins.

Tennessee awaits you in 246 days.
