No. 4 Kentucky drops its first game of the season as its offense struggles in a 70-66 loss to Clemson

Kentucky’s first real road game of the season also brought its first loss of the season.

On Wednesday evening, The No. 4 Wildcats (7-1) struggled offensively from start to finish, losing to the Clemson Tigers (8-1) 70-66. It was by far the worst shooting performance of the year Mark Pope‘s crew, which finished with a season-low 38.1 percent from the field And a season-low 25.9 percent from deep (7-27). Three British players reached double figures but the substitutes’ bench was unavailable, meaning a significant net loss.

Clemson simply outran Kentucky on both ends of the floor, especially in the first half. The Tigers shot as poorly as Great Britain but played with more energy and fearlessness. A total of 35 fouls were committed between the two teams. Ian Schiefelin Clemson dropped 11 points and 20 rebounds, the most of his career, despite going 4-for-20 from the field. Otega Oweh led Kentucky with 17 points and seven rebounds, but later missed some key shots that could have kept his team alive.

66 points represents a season low for Kentucky by 11 points. The previous season low was 77 points in a win over Duke. It just wasn’t Cats Night at Littlejohn Coliseum. Clemson picked up the ACC’s first win of the ACC/SEC Challenge after the SEC won its first nine games.

If you are a fan of chaotic basketball then this is the game for you. The first half was a physical foulfest with a total of 17 fouls in the first 20 minutes. No shots were fired by either team. To make up for poor shooting, Clemson decided to dominate on the glass. The Tigers outscored Kentucky 31-21 in rebounding in the first half, including a 13-7 advantage in offensive rebounds that led to 10 second-chance points.

Towards the end of the first half there was an exchange of blows on both sides. Kentucky struck first with a 9-0 run that gave the Cats a five-point lead. But Clemson responded immediately with a 10-0 victory, reclaiming the lead it would hold for the rest of the half. UK shot just 31.3 percent as a team, while Clemson wasn’t much better at 34.2 percent. Foul trouble hurt Kentucky, but Clemson had a 37-30 lead at halftime, largely thanks to a win against the Cats.

The shots were falling all around and opened the second half. Kentucky quickly got back into the game and regained the lead after just over four minutes. However, it was back and forth from there, with the lead wavering over the next few minutes. But another poorly timed scoring loss from UK allowed Clemson to create some separation. After a timeout of less than eight minutes, the Tigers led 59-54.

Kentucky managed to cut the lead to just three, but Clemson hit right back. A double goal from Jaeden Zackery made the game an eight-point game with just over four minutes left – the highest of the night. Great Britain still had one more run to go and even had a chance to bring it within a point in the final 90 seconds, but three consecutive missed three-pointers from Oweh ultimately sealed defeat.

Next up: Kentucky will hit the road again, traveling to Seattle for a showdown against No. 7 Gonzaga on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 10:00 p.m. EST on ESPN2.
