No Travis Konecny in OT of 4-3 loss to Boston – NBC Sports Philadelphia

For the second straight year, the Flyers gave up their lead in the third period en route to a loss. This time they lost to the Bruins 4-3 in overtime at TD Garden on Saturday afternoon.

The Flyers had a 3-1 lead going into the second intermission, but couldn’t nail it down. A day after John Tortorella punted on poor situational play and the Flyers lost 7-5 to the Panthers, the Flyers were whistled for three penalties in the third period.

One of the three – a trip on Garnet Hathaway – was terribly delicate. Travis Konecny was hit on the first penalty and did not see the ice in overtime (more on that below).

Pavel Zacha won the game for Boston after Brad Marchand equalized with 5:22 minutes left in regulation time.

The Flyers’ blown lead and loss negated multi-point attempts by Matvei Michkov (two goals) and Travis Sanheim (two assists).

The Flyers (12-11-4) have earned at least a point in 11 of their last 14 games (8-3-3) and 14 of their last 20 (11-6-3). But the last two could have meant victories.

Tortorella’s club has gone to overtime in nine of its last 14 games and is 8-2-4 in games decided by one goal.

The Flyers went 1-1-1 against the Bruins this season (15-11-3). They haven’t won a regular season series from Boston since 2019-20, when they last made the playoffs.

• Konecny’s last substitution came more than six minutes into the third period, when the winger took a penalty. The Flyers’ leading scorer was shown walking up the tunnel on the NBC Sports Philadelphia broadcast. He finally returned to the bench toward the end of the third period.

Speaking to reporters in Boston, Tortorella said Konecny was forced to leave the car to be checked for a concussion from a previous collision. The league has a spotter at every game. But when Konecny was cleared to return, Tortorella left him on the bench.

The Flyers just gained a lead on Thursday due to poor penalties. The head coach just spoke about this lesson at length on Friday.

He will hold the players accountable. Whether fans agree with it or not, this is how Tortorella has always operated.

The bank boss also expressed his frustration with the administration in the video below.

John Tortorella discussed officiating and more following the Flyers’ 4-3 overtime loss to the Bruins.

• Aleksei Kolosov gave the Flyers a very good chance to win with 27 saves on 31 shots.

Trent Frederic’s first of two goals came on the power play, cutting the Flyers’ lead to 2-1 in the second period.

The Flyers’ penalty shootout has resulted in six goals in the last three games – one of which was an empty net. Previously, only 10 players were allowed this season.

After Cam York cut the Flyers’ lead back to two in the second period, Frederic cut it again to one as the Bruins mounted their comeback in the third period.

The Flyers were outscored 12-6 in the final stanza and couldn’t do much offensively due to their penalties.

Boston goaltender Jeremy Swayman stopped 23 of the Flyers’ 26 shots.

• It appears the Flyers are being very cautious with Samuel Ersson, who missed his 11th straight game with a lower-body injury.

“I think they’re doing their job,” Ersson said Thursday. “I trust them, they trust me, I think we’ve had a great dialogue throughout the whole process. I think we are taking the right steps.”

The team’s No. 1 goalie had his third practice with the Flyers on Friday and is considered day-to-day.

• Michkov kept rolling.

With his two goals, the 19-year-old winger has seven points (three goals, four assists) in the last three games. He leads all NHL rookies with 24 points (11 goals, 13 assists) in 25 games.

Michkov’s first goal came on the power play. He already has 11 points (five goals, six assists) on the man advantage this season. Last season, Morgan Frost was the Flyers’ power play points leader with 11 points (three goals, eight assists).

And the Flyers were pleased with Michkov’s performance away from the puck.

More: How Michkov’s talent for the big moment is “an unconscious thing.”

• Jamie Drysdale was ruled out for the 12th game in a row with an upper body injury.

• The Flyers return to action on Sunday when they host Utah (7:30 p.m. ET/NBCSP).
