Northern California is experiencing several waves of rain and snow

(FOX40.COM) – After a dry Christmas Day, heavy rain is heading toward the Sacramento Valley in multiple waves as we approach the end of the year.

Temperatures in the Sacramento area will hover in the low to mid 50s for several days, with ample cloud cover and sporadic rain beginning Thursday evening.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for the Sierra Nevada through midday Friday, with between 4 and 12 inches of snow possible in locations 5,000 feet and above, according to the National Weather Service.

There will be a lot of rain overnight Thursday into Friday, with the risk of heavy rainfall, and another shower is forecast Friday night into Saturday morning.

More showers are possible in the Sacramento area Sunday evening.

According to the FOX40 Weather Center, temperatures could climb into the 60s starting this weekend and skies could clear on Monday.
