Northern California Weather Forecast: Return of Atmospheric Rivers

Northern California Weather Forecast: Return of Atmospheric Rivers

After a long period of dry and cold weather, a new pattern of rain and snow is emerging on the horizon.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Weather conditions forecast for the Sacramento region are changing again to a series of wet and active storms with rain and snow. After the Atmospheric River storms more than a week ago, it’s been a long break with dry and cold weather since then.

This new series of storms will fall during the week, part of the weekend and early next week. Rain and snow amounts will be significant, contributing to areas falling behind in the season.

WHEN

The first round of rain and snow will arrive very late Wednesday and early Thursday morning. Rain and snow amounts will be in the light to moderate range with about 0.5 inches for the valley locations and 6 to 8 inches of snow at pass level and snow levels up to about 5,000 feet. This is largely to open up the pattern to more storms.

The second storm was expected to arrive very late on Friday and last for most of the day on Saturday. Nowadays daylight hours are very short and many things are packed into a narrow time window. Additionally, many holiday events are scheduled for a weekend and rain could impact them.

Snow is also a large part of this system, with up to 30 cm of snow possible between Friday and very early Sunday. Loosening is forecast at all altitudes for Sunday.

EFFECTS

Rainfall amounts will be about the same with the second system, nearly 0.50 inches, but it is the timing that could affect further plans. Total rainfall is moderate and widespread flooding is not expected, although local problems with runoff are always possible.

Another storm is scheduled for Monday, meaning the rain will continue into the start of the next work week.

NEED

Preparations must be made for overnight rain and snowfall late Wednesday. Holiday decorations may be affected by rain at night.

The second storm will impact weekend events such as parades and make travel in the Sierra difficult. Holiday travel is also affected by wet roads. Chain checks are likely during both storms and should account for extended travel times and accidents.
