Northern Michigan, UP, hardest hit by lake effect snow

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, parts of northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula were buried under snow on Friday that was reportedly up to a foot and a half deep.

Ben Warren, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Marquette office, said Friday that as of 6 p.m., “very persistent lake effect snow” was still falling, particularly in far eastern and western UP

Schoolcraft County is particularly hard hit, meteorologists say, with a powerful storm band stretching from Munising to Shingleton. By Friday evening, Munising had an accumulation of 15 to 16 inches.

Meanwhile, Warren said western parts of the Keweenaw Peninsula as well as the Ironwood area on the Wisconsin border contained more than a foot of the powdery mixture.
