Notes on the Southwest: Popovich, Thompson, Morant, Boston

Spurs trainer Gregg Popovich has released a statement via the team’s PR department (Twitter link) regarding his recovery from a stroke and the support he has received since leaving the team. Popovich mentioned that he expects to return to coaching at some point.

“It has certainly been an unexpected six weeks for my family and me. As we work together on my recovery, I want to take a moment to share that the overwhelming support we have received during this time has been truly overwhelming in the best way possible. While I wish I could reach out to each and every one of you for now, I want to say that my family and I are forever grateful. We are grateful for our wonderful community, the entire Spurs organization, and our family and friends. No one is more excited about my return to the dugout than the talented people who have guided my rehabilitation process. They quickly learned that I was untrainable.”

Popovich suffered a mild stroke on November 2nd. This was his first public statement since the health scare. assistant Mitch Johnson was the club’s acting head coach in Popovich’s absence.

  • Long-time guard for the Warriors Klay Thompson scored 29 points in outsider Victory at Golden State on Sunday. It was the second trip back to his former home arena and Thompson said he was much more relaxed. “Much easier” Thompson said, according to ESPN’s Ohm Youngmisuk. “Especially when I don’t see all the captain’s hats. I’ve seen some of them. Much easier. I felt more comfortable than I did the first time out here.” Warriors staff lined up along the walls of the ramp where the visiting team arrives at Chase Center and greeted Thompson with a captain’s hat during Dallas’ first trip there last month.
  • Grizzlies guard Yes Morant says he doesn’t want to dunk anymore as he tries to avoid injury in every way possible. However, according to Damichael Cole of the Memphis Commercial Appeal, his teammates are a bit skeptical. “I don’t think he’s serious.” forward Brandon Clarke said. “I just don’t think he lets people have that much of an impact because then there’s a risk of getting fouled hard or getting injured.”
  • The Pelicans lost their 13th straight away game on Sunday, but they got a strong performance from the two-way substitute Brandon Bostonwho scored 20 points, leading five Pelicans in double figures. “His self-confidence grows more and more as the season goes on,” Pelicans coach Willie Green said, according to the Associated Press. “He understands his role. He started some games. At the moment he is in the second unit. He gets solid minutes in every game and is very confident in what he can do once he hits the floor.”
