OPELKA WINS!!

A stunning upset as American Reilly Opelka beats Novak Djkokovic in straight sets.

Opelka won 7-6 (8/6), 6-3 and capped his quarterfinal victory with an ace.

What an achievement!

Standing at 6’11, Opelka – who has a protected rank – put in an excellent serving performance against the 24-time major winner.

He hit 16 aces and committed only one double fault for the match.

Opelka finished the match with 36 game-winning goals to Djokovic’s 15, despite recording 27 unforced errors in the two sets.

It wasn’t that Djokovic played poorly, it was that Opelka – whose career was stalled by injury – took his game to a new level.

In the semi-finals he will face Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.

The plan now for Djokovic is to regroup and focus on the Australian Open, which begins Sunday week.

Thank you very much and goodnight!

This is where we end the blog tonight and what a finish, with Reilly Opelka’s surprise win.

Saturday is semi-final day for both the Brisbane International and United Cup and ABC Sport will bring you all the key results digitally.

Enjoy the rest of your evening!
