Nuggets’ Christian Braun makes his case for Most Improved Player | Sports reporting

You can make a case for Christian Braun being an early contender for Most Improved Player, but the choice has to buck a trend.

The last 10 winners – Jimmy Butler, CJ McCollum, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Victor Oladipo, Pascal Siakam, Brandon Ingram, Julius Randle, Ja Morant, Lauri Markkanen and Tyrese Maxey – won after making a leap to stardom. Braun is in his third NBA season and initially as a starter for the Nuggets, more of a star in his role.

“He fits in so well,” Nuggets coach Michael Malone said after practice Saturday. “He praises Jamal (Murray), Michael (Porter Jr.), Aaron (Gordon) and Nikola (Jokic) because I don’t run a lot of plays for Christian Braun. He’s a guy that just fits into our offense by cutting, moving and running.”

Heading into the Nuggets’ game against the Clippers on Sunday, Orlando’s Franz Wagner, Oklahoma City’s Jalen Williams and Charlotte’s LaMelo Ball are the favorites to win Most Improved Player at the end of the season. All three fit the current trend of established starters making the jump to All-Star status. Wagner increased his productivity while Paolo Banchero was out. The same goes for Williams, who became the Thunder’s No. 2 prospect without Chet Holmgren. After missing most of the last two seasons due to injury, Ball has increased his scoring output from 23.9 points per game last season to 31.1, making him Charlotte’s top option this season.

A few players in similar situations like Braun, Atlanta’s Jalen Johnson and Dyson Daniels round out the top five players, while Denver’s 23-year-old winger sits on the third line.

Braun’s case likely hinges on his ability to continue to operate with great efficiency on offense. Nine of the last ten winners have averaged 20 points per game or more. In 17 games, Braun is averaging 16.2 points.

Not only is he scoring nearly nine more points per game than last season, he’s also doing it in a much more efficient manner. He uses his athleticism to counter the ball and finish, which has helped him hit 58% from the field. He also makes opposing defenses pay for doubling Jokic by knocking down 47.9% of his three-point shots. After having a free throw rate of under 70% in his first two seasons, Braun is over 80% entering his third season.

“It starts in transition. He is one of the best transition players in the NBA. I think he’s in the top five in fast break points per game,” Malone said.

“What I love about him this year is that even if he misses a shot, he has no concerns about the next shot. He’s shooting the ball with so much confidence right now. Plus, he’s still on the ball and putting pressure on the defense at a high level.”

Braun made a name for himself on defense as a rookie, helping Denver win its first championship. His responsibilities in this area have expanded in recent seasons. While his name may not be big enough or his play spectacular enough to deserve the award, Braun’s improvement was one of the best developments for the Nuggets early in the season.

“At Christian Braun you will now receive the complete package. I’m so proud of him,” Malone said.

“You never want to put a cap on a player. So, yeah, we’ll definitely continue to try to expand his game and his skillset, but right now I think he’s doing everything and beyond what we need to do right now to help us win games.”
