Nuggets could cut ties with Russell Westbrook through a trade with the Celtics

The Denver Nuggets should consider restructuring their roster after an unusual start to the season.

The Nuggets may need to trade a former MVP and nine-time All-Star to move in a positive direction.

“Here is a wild and unlikely trade proposal that would bring the Celtics a former MVP. “It’s a three-team deal between Boston (Celtics), the Chicago Bulls and Denver Nuggets,” Sports Illustrated’s Matt Levine wrote last Friday.

“Denver would be getting an experienced wing that could help them moving forward this season. (Torrey) Craig could solidify them in the Western Conference and help them pursue another title.”

“Chicago would gain a young player in (Jaden) Springer that they could try to mold. They also receive a future draft pick that could be used in potential deals down the road.”

“Boston is doing this deal for two reasons. First, by trading Springer, the team saves a little money on the salary cap, helping with the eventual luxury tax.”

“And secondly, (Russell) Westbrook has shown that he is ready to join a winning team this season. If he could come off the bench for Boston, just for a few minutes, that could help keep the Celtics offense strong when the stars sit.”

“Westbrook has been one of the most polarizing players in recent memory, but he can still show flashes of his greatness at different times. The veteran is loved in the locker room and could bring more experience.”

In Levine’s multi-team trade proposal, the Celtics would receive Westbrook, the Bulls would receive Springer and a 2030 second-round pick, and the Nuggets would receive Craig.

Although Westbrook is long past his prime, his performance is still adequate even at 36 years old.

The fearless downhill attacker and strong-character professional averages 11.3 points, 6.4 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game as a second-unit guard.

Westbrook’s chaotic style of basketball has led to turnover problems in recent years, but surprisingly he is playing the cleanest basketball of his career.

The UCLA product coughs up the basketball just 2.4 times per contest, which is near a career low for Westbrook.

Craig is a valuable two-way veteran with significant playoff experience, but the Nuggets would be better off keeping Westbrook in Denver.
