Nuggets’ Jamal Murray illustrates what makes Stephen Curry so difficult to guard

The Denver Nuggets staged a comeback late in the fourth quarter against the Golden State Warriors and were able to clinch the victory. One of the reasons for their comeback was the containment of Stephen Curry, who finished the game with 24 points by shooting 8-of-23 from the field and 4-0f-15 from three.

Jamal Murray knows from experience that Curry can get hot at any moment of a game, and he recounted the difficulties of guarding the Warriors’ point guard.

“Steph is obviously hard to guard, he moves around a lot,” Murray said. “I think they miss Draymond out there just because their timing was wrong. If he’s been open for just a split second, that’s usually when he gets it. But Steph, you can defend him, he passes, and then you have to chase him wherever he goes. And then you have to talk if you want to change. That’s the hard part. If he gives up, everyone needs to know where he is going or where he will be.”

Curry has made a living and scored a lot of points by moving without the ball, and that’s when he seems to be at his most dangerous. Pencil in Draymond Green directing traffic, and Curry will also be hard to stop. Luckily for the Nuggets, they didn’t have to deal with that and walked away with the win.

With 6:13 minutes left in the game, the Warriors had an 11-point lead after trailing early in the fourth quarter. At this point, the Nuggets were starting to assert themselves, and while it took a team effort, Nikola Jokic was the player who stood out. Jokic controlled the offense and knocked down big shots while also getting his teammates involved.

Jokic finished the game with 28 points, 10 rebounds and six assists and was asked after the game what he had learned about the Nuggets so far this season.

“That we can surprise everyone, for better or for worse,” Jokic said. “Literally everyone.”

The Nuggets have been mid-table in the Western Conference this season and have struggled with injuries and a lack of bench production outside of Russell Westbrook. Over the years, the Nuggets have lost depth after being unable to retain some of their key players due to money constraints.

Despite these issues, Jokic is the one constant on the team who has led them to victories while he has been on the field. If Jokic continues to play at a high level, the Nuggets will have a chance in every game, and that was the case when they faced the Warriors.
