Nvidia announces the GeForce RTX 5000 series

Nvidia is widely expected to unveil its new GeForce RTX 5000 series graphics cards like the RTX 5080 and 5090 at the CES event in Las Vegas today. CEO Jensen Huang takes the stage at 6:30 p.m. (PT). In addition to the next generation of graphics cards for gaming, AI will also be a major topic of conversation, but gamers are hoping for news on the new RTX 5000 series, including confirmation on pricing, specifications and release dates, as well as internal performance testing.

You can watch the Nvidia CES Keynote livestream today starting at 6:30 p.m. PT using the link below.

What we want to know about the RTX 5000 series

There are some significant pieces missing from our knowledge of the RTX 5000 series, with rumors and leaks so far only covering vague specifications for the entire series. The keynote will hopefully reveal most of the information we want to see, but it’s likely that some of it will be withheld as some models may not be released for several months.

Nvidia RTX 5000 prices

That’s the big thing. There is little to no concrete information on pricing for the new RTX 5000 series, but some figures in the rumor mill suggest significant price increases compared to previous generations. For example, according to recent rumors, the RTX 5090 will cost between $2,000 and $2,500 – significantly more than the RTX 4090’s launch price of $1,600.

While higher prices could boost profits for what is currently the world’s second most valuable company, gamers will not be happy as graphics card prices have skyrocketed in recent years thanks to the pandemic and cryptocurrency mining. Today should provide at least some clarity, but it’s also worth noting that AMD and Intel are also expected to make graphics card announcements this week.

Nvidia RTX 5000 specifications

So far we know that the RTX 5090 will receive a major memory upgrade from 24GB to 32GB – this was recently confirmed by a leak published on tech website Videocardz, which revealed an RTX 5090 model from Inno3D called the iChill X3. The box clearly stated 32GB, which is probably GDDR7 memory. The RTX 5080 and 5070 Ti retain the same 16GB as the RTX 4080 and RTX 4070 Ti Super, but that’s a 4GB increase compared to the 4070 Ti and 4070.

The RTX 5070 will apparently come with 12GB – just like the RTX 4070, while the RTX 5060 Ti, like the RTX 4060 Ti, will have 16GB and 8GB variants. Further down the line, the RTX 5060 retains the same 8GB as the RTX 4060, at least according to rumors, but specs for at least the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 should be revealed today. Previous launch plans suggest that Nvidia may not offer full details on other models and we’ll likely only see these two cards in detail today.

Nvidia RTX 5000 release schedule

According to a leak listed in the link below, the RTX 5080 is likely to launch first, followed by the RTX 5090, with the former arriving on January 21st. Based on previous launch plans, this would suggest that the RTX 5090 would follow in February or March and the rest of the batch will arrive some time before June.

Of course, much of what we know is based on rumors and alleged leaks from the industry, so we may find that things are exactly as we expected. Nvidia has typically stuck to similar launch schedules when releasing new architectures, but today we’ll likely know the availability of at least the RTX 5090 and 5080, and most likely other models as well, albeit missing certain details.

I will report on the new hardware launches in January. So follow me here on Forbes using the blue button below, on Facebook or YouTube for the latest news and reviews, and don’t forget to comment below with your thoughts on Nvidia’s launch.
